Rural Road Upgrade Reaches 4,700 Kilometers

Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization has completed upgrading and asphalt overlay work on 4,699 kilometers of secondary and rural roads this year, part of a drive to improve travel quality and safety outside major corridors.

Seyed Reza Sharifi, director general of the office for secondary and rural roads, said the seven-month program covered 2,817 kilometers of rural roads and 1,882 kilometers of secondary routes. Alongside surfacing, crews carried out sub-base and preparation work on 3,415 kilometers of rural routes and paved more than 1,950 kilometers. The organization also built 2,183 technical structures to strengthen crossings and improve infrastructure safety.

Sharifi noted that rural roads span 203,248 kilometers—including asphalt, gravel and dirt—while secondary roads total 38,995 kilometers. The figures were reported by IRNA, citing the organization. Officials describe the program as a continuing effort to close gaps in local access infrastructure and make everyday trips safer and more reliable for residents in smaller communities.

He said annual planning sets precise operational targets, prioritizing fair service distribution, easier daily travel and road-user safety.
