Iran and India have agreed to intensify technical cooperation on product standards, a move aimed at dismantling regulatory hurdles that currently weigh on two-way commerce, officials said following a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS standardization summit in Bengaluru.
Farzaneh Ansari, head of Iran's National Standards Organization, held talks with Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), focusing on practical steps to harmonise conformity assessment procedures and upgrade quality infrastructure. Both sides identified mutual recognition of technical specifications as a critical lever for smoothing cross-border supply chains and cutting administrative delays for exporters in sectors ranging from industrial machinery to consumer goods.
The dialogue extended to the exchange of specialised know-how, joint training programmes, and collaborative initiatives in educational capacity-building. The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to deepening institutional ties, emphasising that closer regulatory collaboration would not only improve product quality but also reduce the non-tariff barriers that often inflate costs for traders.
The bilateral encounter took place within the broader BRICS heads of standards meeting, hosted by the BIS. That larger gathering is focused on fostering regulatory convergence, strengthening shared quality infrastructure, and driving technical cohesion across the bloc's emerging economies—an agenda that Tehran and New Delhi are now seeking to advance bilaterally.
