A play directed by theater artist Masoud Delkhah is currently on stage at Charsoo Hall of Tehran City Theater complex.
Titled ‘The Stranger’, the story is a rewritten version of a novel by contemporary French-Algerian philosopher, author, and journalist Albert Camus, under the same name, Honaronline reported.
The main character is Meursault, a French Algerian, who, after attending his mother’s funeral, kills an Arab man. The story in two parts, presents Meursault’s first-person narrative before and after the murder, respectively.
A 1942 work, the play’s theme and outlook are often cited as examples of Camus’s philosophy of existentialism and the absurd.
According to Camus, “In our society any man who does not weep at his mother’s funeral runs the risk of being sentenced to death. I only meant that the hero of my book is condemned because he does not play the game.”
“In the adapted version we have made some changes in dialogues and scenes, although the plot in general is preserved,” said Delkhah.
Rahim Norouzi, Hossein Saharkhiz, Siavash Cheraghipour, Ali Zarrini, Hamidreza Hedayati, Naser Ashouri and Houman Rastgar are among the cast.
The 100-minute play will be on stage through July 1 at the venue, located at the junction of Vali-e Asr and Enqelab Streets.
