Chalcography on Display

A printmaking exhibition ‘Mirror’ by the Third Group has opened at Laleh Art Gallery in Tehran.

Curated by painter Ahmad Vakili, the exhibition has works by 11 artists on display, Honaronline reported.

“The collection is the outcome of about two years of continuous efforts by a group of 11 young artists who learned chalcography under my supervision and created different works based on their own imagination,” Vakili said.

Chalcography is engraving on copper plates used for printmaking and for illustrations in the production of books. Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. It normally covers only the process of creating prints that have an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting.

A specialized session will also be held at the gallery on January 12, where Vakili will speak about handmade printing.

The exhibition includes works by Morteza Ardalan, Karim Bakhshi, Farahnaz Rahmati, Gita Azimzadeh and Elham Kashani among others.

Born in Tehran, Vakili, 54, did his master’s in painting from the University of Tehran in 1995. His works have been shown in Italy and Japan. Apart from painting, from 1984 he started teaching and in 1990 he was invited to teach at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Tehran. Since then, he has been teaching there as well as at SIslamic Azad University.

The exhibition is open to the public until January 21 at the gallery located next to Laleh Hotel, Fatemi Ave.
